Safety of portable inoculation cabinets.

چکیده
Laboratory work with pathogenic microorganisms should be performed in a ventilated safety cabinet. A minimum airflow of 0-5 metres per second through the working aperture has been recommended, with discharge of the exhaust air through a filter, then into the open air (Department of Health and Social Security, 1970). Such a unit must be permanently installed. There are possible advantages to a portable unit, in which the filter is replaced by a 'furnace', the sterile exhaust then being discharged into the laboratory (Brown, 1961). The performance of a commercially available cabinet of this type is reported here.

Performance of exhaust-protective (class I) biological 'safety' cabinets.
Nineteen open-fronted (class I) safety cabinets were subjected to spore containment and airflow tests, which suggested that a flow of 0.75 m/s was the minimum required for safe operation; further tests on three of the cabinets were repeated at different air speeds and confirmed this. The airflow is required to overcome the effect of laboratory or external air currents. Contamination of surfaces...

Automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs) are used widely, but safety gaps remain. Nursing-pharmacy collaboration, expert guidance, self-assessment tools, compliance with nursing best practices, and continuing education are essential to optimize the safety and productivity of ADC use.

The use of automated dispensing systems (ADS), also known as automated dispensing cabinets (ADC), unit-based cabinets (UBC), automated dispensing devices (ADD), automated distribution cabinets and automated dispensing machines (ADM), in hospitals is increasing. In 2011, 40% of US hospital pharmacies had a decentralised inpatient medication distribution system and 89% of those used ADS 1. There ...

THE apparatus described in this note might be helpful to surgeons who, like myself, have a scattered H population to cover. In this kind of area, eye clinics are, perforce, held in buildings where the ininstallation of permanent test-type f cabinets or drums is impracticable. Some form of portable test-type is therefore required. This should possess means of illuminating the chart, and should b...
